In the same year, EXMAR received an <b>&#8216;Approval in Principle&#8217; from Lloyd&#8217;s Register<\/b> for an ammonia-fueled midsize gas carrier, demonstrating the technical feasibility and safety of ammonia as a marine fuel. Together, these achievements established a clear pathway for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from shipping while supporting international climate objectives. They also accelerated the development of the technologies, infrastructure, and regulatory framework required for ammonia-fueled vessels. The fuel supply system delivered by Nord Gas Solutions is designed to handle both ammonia and LPG as fuel, providing significant operational flexibility. Extensive safety studies, hazard identification exercises, and risk assessments were therefore carried out throughout the design process, with the <b>safety of seafarers remaining the highest priority<\/b>. Drawing on EXMAR&#8217;s long-standing experience in transporting ammonia safely as cargo, the vessel design incorporated multiple layers of protection and industry-leading safety standards, with each partner contributing expertise in its respective field.<\/p><p>This <b>pioneering collaboration<\/b> ultimately resulted in the construction of <b>four ammonia dual-fuel midsize gas carriers<\/b>. <em>ANTWERPEN<\/em> is the first vessel in this series to be delivered, representing a <b>major milestone<\/b> in the transition towards lower-carbon shipping and the practical use of ammonia as a marine fuel.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-608007a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"608007a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">International safety framework<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d1aa4cd elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d1aa4cd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Technology alone is not enough to introduce a new marine fuel. Safe operation must requires an appropriate regulatory framework. When EXMAR began its ammonia fuel journey, existing international regulations did not permit toxic cargoes such as ammonia to be used as fuel on gas carriers. <b>Working closely with the Belgian administration<\/b> and Lloyd\u2019s Register, EXMAR played a pioneering role in establishing an <a href=\"https:\/\/exmar.com\/en\/news-center\/collaboration-of-industry-leaders-and-flag-adminitrations-lead-to-approval-of-the-imos-ammonia-as-fuel-safety-guidelines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>international safety framework and regulations<\/b><\/a> to allow ammonia\u2019s use as marine fuel on gas carriers. Thanks to EXMAR\u2019s expertise, this significant change is opening new possibilities for sustainable shipping. This milestone <b>signals the start of a new fuel era in shipping<\/b>, positioning EXMAR at the forefront of sustainable maritime innovation.<\/p><p>To support the safe introduction of ammonia as a marine fuel, EXMAR has also developed <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/exmar.com\/en\/ammonia-training-development-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a comprehensive in-house ammonia training program<\/a><\/strong> for seafarers and shore-based personnel. The program focuses on the safe handling, operation, and management of ammonia-fueled vessels and builds on EXMAR&#8217;s extensive operational experience with ammonia transportation. In addition to training its own personnel, EXMAR also makes this expertise <a href=\"https:\/\/exmar.com\/en\/ammonia-training-development-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>available to third parties<\/b><\/a>, helping to support the wider adoption of ammonia across the maritime industry.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-82b7db6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"82b7db6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">About the vessels<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9a9062b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9a9062b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Theses dual ammonia-powered dual-fuel midsize gas carriers can each <strong>transport over 46,000 cubic meters<\/strong> of ammonia and LPG. The vessel can use conventional fuel or ammonia for its propulsion.<\/p><p>As per EXMAR\u2019s tradition, each ship in the series of four will be <a href=\"https:\/\/exmar.com\/en\/news-center\/worlds-first-ocean-going-ammonia-dual-fuel-vessels-named-in-south-korea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>named after a Belgian city<\/strong><\/a>, starting this time with the letter <em>A <\/em>for ammonia. After <strong><em>ANTWERPEN<\/em><\/strong>, the second ship was named <strong><em>ARLON<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 The name giving and delivery of the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> ammonia-dual fuel Midsize Gas Carriers will take place in the coming months. The fourth vessel is scheduled for delivery early 2027.
